I often use my daily walks as a creative practice and I became drawn to roadside crosses, a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages.
These crosses are a reminder of ancient settlement boundaries, erected on hilltops to show vertical boundaries and most of them were erected as a pledge, with the aim to show gratitude or as a reminders of misfortunes that happened in the past. Some of the crosses were erected by individuals or families, but in other cases they were the work of several individuals or families, or even a whole village community. Passing men would raise their hats, while women would plant flowers, care for them and protect them.
Unfortunately, urbanisation has led to the erosion of many crosses, but some of them still have an important significance for the community.
